We are very pleased to welcome you to the Catalogue Raisonné of François Eberl (1887 – 1962)!

On this page art lovers from over the world will find nearly 800 known authentic oil paintings by Eberl produced during a career that spanned five decades. This free-access site regards itself as an on-going project with additional entries made as they are received and carefully checked for authenticity.

François Eberl is an artist well worth rediscovering. At his prime, his name was ranked among fellow painters like Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani and Maurice de Vlaminck, who were also part of Eberl´s circle of close friends. Although well-known for his sensual nudes, it was the first and foremost his authentic depiction of Monmartre’s gritty nightlife atmosphere with its prostitutes, gamblers, drug addicts and alcoholics that promoted Eberl´s fame. Drawing inspiration from the folklore of Paris, he preferred the visualization of street scenes and nightclubs. Eberl was interested in capturing a particularly haunting essence of that atmosphere: the marginalized lives of the poor in the shadows of glittering Paris.

As a descendant of a well-off family François Eberl enjoyed financial freedom as well as success his life. Despite his position in life he loved to mingle with the so-ced "lower classes" and since they trusted him, he was owed to paint them. Eberl has never compromised his models but he rather put emphasis on their humanity. This distinguishes him from many other painters of his time. Eberl’s Monmartre paintings are the embodiment of a social environment in a given time – the evocation of Bohemian Paris, a mythical place in time when even the back streets had a certain grandeur and romantic flair.

Index Number
paintings are assigned to an index number (WVZ-Nr.). Currently, the Catalogue Raisonné contains approximately 700 works. These paintings are presented in ascending chronological and stylistic order with a "G" preceding the number. The "G" represents Gemälde, German for paintings. works discovered after March 2013 are added with the signifier "N" followed by a number. The "N" represents Nachtrag, German for addendum.

 

Category
paintings are assigned to one or more of six categories depending on their motives. Multiple assignments are possible.

Title
The paintings´ titles are either based on Eberl´s hand-written notes or on his widow´s, Béatrice Eberl´s, and the artist´s nephew and protégé Frédéric Marc Geuthner´s records. Untitled paintings are assigned to a descriptive title.

 

Year
François Eberl dated some of his artworks himself (Signature/Date/Description) and moreover left an extensive archive providing supplementary information. The Catalogue Raisonné is based on this material and references gathered from public and private collections. The works are listed chronologicy and due to their stylistic context and motif. If the date is unknown, an assumed date - indicated by a sm "c" - is ocated.

 

Technique
The Catalogue Raisonné is limited to Eberl´s oil paintings - the picture carrier may vary.

 

Dimensions
dimensions are indicated in cm (heights x width), updates and supplements are continuously added due to the relevant picture source.

 

Provenance
Provenance and location of the works are regurarly updated in respectful consideration of the owners´ desire for anonymity.

 

Images
We endeavour to depict the works in the highest quality possible and to update them continuously. Most of the black-and-white photographs are taken from the artist´s own photo archive.
